Alina obtained her Chemistry BS degree from the University of Puerto Rico, Rio Piedras campus. She then went on to earn her PhD in Pharmacology at the University of Rochester in 2017. Since her graduate work, she has been interested in the study of astrocytes during pathogenesis. Her work in the Segal laboratory focuses on understanding the interplay between inflammatory infiltrating leukocytes (neutrophil or monocyte/macrophages) and astrocytes in the context of experimental autoimmune encephalomyelitis (EAE). Her goal is to elucidate if and by which mechanism immune cell infiltrates alter the astrocytic phenotype throughout the course of EAE.
